Getting Started with Mindfulness: My Journey to Understanding the Basics

Updated: Mar 5

When I first heard about mindfulness, I was skeptical. Sitting quietly and merely observing my thoughts seemed too simple to be effective. However, as life grew busier and stress started to build, I decided to explore mindfulness further and give it a try. My journey has unveiled some remarkable insights that I’m eager to share with you!

What is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness is fundamentally about being present in the moment without judgment. It involves tuning into your thoughts, emotions, and the sensations around you. During chaotic times, I found that practicing mindfulness allowed me to step back from racing thoughts and truly engage with the world.

Finding My Breath

One of the first techniques I learned was mindful breath awareness. It sounds easy—just breathe and focus on your breath. Yet, I quickly realized how challenging this can be. Each time I settled in, my mind would drift to my never-ending to-do list or the conversation I had earlier that day.

To help with this, I adopted a technique known as “4-7-8 breathing.” By inhaling for 4 seconds, holding for 7 seconds, and exhaling for 8 seconds, I found a grounding method to return to the present moment. This technique can be done anytime, anywhere. I struggled with this at first, but practice was key to getting to 8 seconds.

The Power of Observation

Another enriching aspect of mindfulness I discovered is the practice of observation. I began taking brief breaks throughout my day to simply observe my surroundings. One memorable experience involved sitting outside and focusing on a single tree. I paid attention to its leaves fluttering in the wind and the way light danced through the branches. I find myself stepping outside when I feel stressed or overwhelmed. The change in scenery lets me forget about the issue at hand for a few moments.

This simple act led to a greater appreciation for the details often ignored. With mindfulness, I could connect profoundly with my environment, bringing a sense of calm even amidst a busy schedule. These moments transformed into cherished pockets of tranquility that helped improve my overall well-being.

Overcoming Challenges

Like any journey, my mindfulness practice had its challenges. There were days when my mind felt too cluttered to settle. By reading about common hurdles others face, I came to understand that these feelings are a natural part of the process. This realization helped me cultivate patience with myself.

It’s essential to know that it’s completely fine for the mind to wander. The key is to gently redirect your focus back to your breath or surroundings, without being harsh on yourself. This shift in perspective transformed my approach to mindfulness, fostering greater self-compassion and making the practice more enjoyable.

Try this: Pretend your mind is a highway, and the billboards are your impeding thoughts when trying to be mindful or meditate. Just like driving, you notice the sign and pass it. You do not make a U-turn in traffic to read it again. With your thoughts, just notice them and let them go by.

Embracing the Mindfulness Journey

As I continue to delve into mindfulness, I am consistently reminded of how it can change day-to-day experiences. What began as mere curiosity has now become a foundational aspect of my life.

Mindfulness goes beyond quiet moments of meditation; it encourages living with intention and truly engaging with the world. If you feel intrigued about exploring mindfulness, I highly recommend starting small. Whether it’s spending a few moments on breath awareness or taking time to intentionally observe your surroundings, these small changes can lead to significant shifts in how you experience your days.

Here's to embarking on the journey of mindfulness together!
